SEO For Small Business - The Top SEO Factors for Small Business - No. 1: Just Do It!

SEO is like physical fitness. You need to 'get in shape,' and to do that you need a plan. You need to identify the most important factors for small business. You need to meet with your web design team. You need to know your keywords. But, most importantly: you need to 'just do it.' If a company waits until everything on the website is perfect, it will often be paralyzed. Don't fall into this trap!

Just Do It!

World-famous Nike has the world-famous slogan, "Just do it!" The slogan is as ever-present as leaves on a tree or snow flakes in a Boston, Winter. What does it mean? Get off your you-know-what, and just do it! Just get out there and play basketball! Get out there and run! Get out there and climb that mountain! As advertising slogans go, it is a powerful message and motivator for the athlete in all of us.

As someone who teaches SEO and also consults, I wish that more of my students and clients would take Nike to heart. Just do it!. Many companies have government by committee, and many of the people on these committees want the perfect and not the good. One of my favorite saying is, "The perfect is the enemy of the good." by the French philosopher Voltaire. Like Nike, Voltaire meant for us to realize that if we wait for the perfect in life, we will never get anything done.

Students and clients often ask me, what is the most important factor in succeeding at SEO? I'm not sure of the number two factor (more below), but I am sure of the No. 1 factor: the will to just do it. The will to just get started, and keep at it.

So get your web team together and smash through those bureaucratic barriers to successful SEO. Just do it!

The Most Important SEO Factors for Small Businesses

So, beyond 'Just do it,' what are the most important factors to succeeding at SEO. Here would be my list of things for a company to do, first and foremost -

  1. Identify customer-centric keywords.
  2. Place the most important keywords in the home page TITLE tag and throughout the TITLE tags on the website.
  3. Create new keyword-heavy content.
  4. Link to this content from the home page.
  5. Issue news.

As I teach in my SEO classes, there are many nuances to how these factors work together and there are many, many strategies for success in search marketing. But, the theme of this blog post is to JUST DO IT. So figure out a few keywords, and place them in your home page TITLE tags. You will be amazed!

Never Stop Learning

Another theme of both Nike and Voltaire is to never stop. Not just to just do it, once, but to never stop trying, never stop learning, never stop improving.

So beyond 'just do it,' be sure to never stop learning. Keep trying at your SEO, keep posting good keyword-heavy content, keep building links, keep blogging. Just keep on keeping on. Never, never, never stop learning. SEO - like physical fitness - is more a process than an outcome.

Just do it!
