HTML Page Tags for SEO

The META DESCRIPTION and TITLE tags are arguably among the most important on-page HTML elements when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO). META tags consist of three tags that reside in the head of your HTML code and should be found at the very top of your page.

Example:
<HEAD> <TITLE> A Site Title Goes Here</TITLE>
<META name="Description" content="Description of your site">
<META name="keywords" content="keywords describing your site">
</HEAD>

Note that for most purposes the META KEYWORDS tag is ignored. You may use it anyway; it will not hurt you, but probably does not help you. You should also use other key tags like H1, H2, A HREF, and the ALT attribute for images. Weave your keywords inside your major tags for best SEO / search engine optimization.

Title tags and meta tag components are information that describes your site and page to visitors as well as search engines. Keeping them relevant, compelling and accurate are key to ranking well. Search engines recognize that page titles, or metadata title tags, are what people see first, so they put more weight on them in their ranking. The more human-readable your titles are in natural search results, the more you increase the likelihood of click-through. Dedicating time and resources to constructing meaningful title tags for each page of your Website is one of the most important SEO practices you can implement.

When developing your title tags, follow these guidelines that are known to contribute to better SEO rankings

  • Assign a unique title to each Webpage (URL) on your site.
  • Make sure the title gives an accurate description of page content and contains your targeted keywords.
  • Be brief. Most search engines will cut your titles off after 80 characters.
