How important is the A NAME tag or 'Internal Bookmarks' for SEO?
Question: -
Q: what importance does google put on bookmarks in the url, ex.www.company.com/practice.htm#divorce_options:
Answer: -
The A NAME attribute is a modification of the A HREF tag to allow for internal bookmarks. The proper syntax is:
<A HREF="#WORD">Target</A>
And then:
<A NAME="WORD">Target</A>
As with any link, Google interprets this as a vote, so you can assume this is a very small vote that whatever is inside the target space (usually your keyword) is important to that page. For that reason, I like to use them, especially in BLOG posts to identify the major topics, which are also indicated with H2 tags.
In terms of Google results, it will occasionally pick up this embedded link, and surfers can see links within links on the page. So there is a little extra cool factor there as well. So definitely use them! Embed your keywords inside them!
Hope this helps!
