It used to be quite slow - even months. But with the advent of 'real-time search' Google is rapidly changing the ranks of certain pages. News in particular is every more important - sites with news, and the news releases themselves can very quickly get foisted to the top ten of any given search.
The bottom line is to blog and create news, as Google now heavily rewards and rapidly rewards fresh content! In addition, I am often asked how to get a site REINDEXED by Google. The short answer: issue news! And blog!
