Do your keywords have to be visible to work for SEO?
Question: -
Q: Do all key words have to be on your website or can they be behind the scenes? And, is there a limit to the number of key words you can have?
Answer: -
General rule of thumb: Google wants to see exactly what the human surfers see. So if you 'hide' your keywords through tricks like white text on a white background, or tiny font sizes, you run the risk of being de-indexed. Secondly, many years back people used the META KEYWORD tag to have lots of keywords but these keywords were not to be found on the actual web page. So Google (and Yahoo and BING) now ignore the META KEYWORD tag. It is useless. Third, you can use the ALT attribute in images to place your keywords; that is acceptable. Similarly, you can use the TITLE attribute for A HREF tags, as well as pull down menus, etc.
But the most powerful indication of keywords are the visible tags such as the TITLE, A HREF and H1 family.
You also ask if there is a limit to keywords. Technically no, but practically yes. Your TITLE has just 7-10 words for example, and each page should not be stuffed with keywords. Focus, focus, focus. That is the key to doing well vs. Google.
Hope this helps!
