News is increasingly important to Google and other search engines as they move towards what is called 'real-time search.' When you Google a term like 'Haiti Earthquake' or 'Zhu Zhu Pet,' you aren't always looking for the most authoritative website; you are often looking for the website with the latest content.
So Google rewards sites that have news and frequent updates. That said, new syndication services like PRLOG.org are popping up like mushrooms after a rain. You can create your news, list it for free on these services, and syndicate it across for web. You get a ton of SEO benefit from your news.
