Are Meta tags like the Meta Keywords tag still important for SEO? What about blogs and tags?

Q: Are Meta Tags, description, keywords, etc. still important? Does Google still give them weight? How about on blogs - where are the "tags" for a blog?

I get this question a lot. A lot of confusion exists on META TAGS. The META KEYWORD tag is largely ignored, so forget about that one. It was heavily abused. The META DESCRIPTION tag controls your visible description on Google, so it is extremely important. And technically speaking the TITLE tag is a META tag and it is the MOST IMPORTANT tag on any page. So use keyword heavy TITLE tags and META DESCRIPTION tags, and write the latter so that it is pithy and exciting (it's your ad on Google).
As for blogs and tags, quite frankly, a blog to Google is really just a website. So all the same tag rules apply that I teach in our session on Page Tags.
