How do the H1 / H2 tags work for SEO?
Question: -
Q: Can you please re-explain the H1 & H2 tags and can you show them from the user side vs. the HTML side?
Answer: -
Page Tags can be confusing to people. I usually liken them to playing cards. We are playing cards against our competitors, and Google is the dealer and sets the rules. We are trying to communicate to Google how important our website is, and to do so we use the Page Tags just as we use cards in a card game.
The Tags have different values. The TITLE is the most powerful, and appears at the TOP of the browser. It's like the Ace. Down from that, you have your Kings, Queens, and Jacks. These are tags like the H1 / H2 family, and A HREF family. Any time you 'nest' a keywords inside one of these tags, you are sending a powerful signal to Google.
All the tags are visible on the page EXCEPT the META DESCRIPTION tag, which controls the visible description not on your own website but on Google. The TITLE is visible at the very top of the browser, and of course on Google itself as the headline of your listing. The other tags are visible both to humans and in HTML to the search spiders like Google.
Here are some samples for the H1 family -
H1 Text: To REALLY emphasize a keyword place it inside and H1
H2 Text: To emphasize a keyword place it inside an H2
H3 Text: To emphasize it some, please it in an H3
And so forth. So the H1 / H2 family is visible both to surfers and to Google.
Hope this helps!
