How do geographical terms influence the search results?
Question: -
Q: when my customers search a broad search term, will regional results come up based on their ip address? Does that allow me to choose broader key words because I'm not competing with the entire country?
Answer: -
Yes and no. How Google returns local results is covered in our Social Media section as part of Google Places / Google Local. Basically, if a searcher enters a generic term like 'Pizza' Google looks at the IP address to target -
- Google AdWords - IF the advertisers have geotargeted their ads
- Google Places - it gives local businesses that are close to the IP address
Natural / organic free results are NOT influenced, at least not heavily in this way. Instead, these results appear IF and ONLY IF the geographic terms are added by the searcher, as in 'Pizza New York City.'
This has HUGE implications on your SEO / AdWords / Googel Local strategy, which of course I touch on in the AdWords and Social Media courses.
Hope this helps!
