How do subdomains vs. domains work for links and SEO?
Question: -
Q: if an external organization links to my subdomain will my top level domain also get the benefits of the external link? who gets the count?
Answer: -
Very interesting question. Most people do NOT realize that a subdomain - blogs.wholefoods.com vs. www.wholefoods.com are DIFFERENT websites to Google. COMPLETELY different. So that has huge implications for SEO.
A link to the 'blog' subdomain is not thought to pass 'link juice' to the 'www' subdomain. Bottom line: most SEO's do not believe in subdomains for small companies. It is better to use subdirectories like wholefoods.com/blog. Many large companies use subdomains for a number of reasons, but not really for SEO.
Hope this helps!
