That depends. For most of the small businesses that I have worked for, I would estimate ten to thirty hours to 'get the website in SEO shape,' assuming you understand (from my classes or other sources of in-depth search engine optimization information), that you know WHAT to do and HOW to do it.
Then after that transformation, I estimate the average business needs to spend a couple hours a week on NEW content, and LINK building / social media / social mentions. The maintenance isn't that difficult - it just takes a disciplined effort. Where most businesses go wrong is a) they do NOT understand the rules of SEO, and b) they do not systematically implement them. So they don't succeed.
