What does a 'preferred domain' mean in Google Webmaster tools?
Q: In Webmaster tools>Configuration>Settings - there is a preferred domain section giving three options one being 'don't set a preferred domain' which is what mine is set to - I do have a radio button next to 'Display URLs as www.hondaoakland.com - what
Great question! The preferred domain means are you going to answer on www.jm-seo.org, or just jm-seo.org. You want to SET a preferred domain in Webmaster tools, and also using your .htaccess file generally make sure that it responds on ONE only. For example - http://jm-seo.org redirects automatically to http://www.jm-seo.org/ and we have set our preferred domain in webmaster tools to be http://www.jm-seo.org.
That's a very important point. Why? because www.jm-seo.org and jm-seo.org could be TWO websites to Google, and you want to avoid any confusion / duplicate content issues. So yes set a preferred domain both on Webmaster tools and via the .htaccess file.
Hope this helps!
