You ask a lot of questions Michael, which is fabulous. Let me just focus on one - AdWords vs. SEO. In a simple model, I recommend - Do NOT advertise if you are appearing 'for free' on page 1 (top ten). Or perhaps if you are in the top three natural results. Why? Budget. Adwords is EXPENSIVE! Unless you have a really robust budget, you can (and will) burn thru tons of money on AdWords with not so great results. So it's a rare business that can sustain a huge AdWords budget / expense.
That said, IF you have budget, you are right - you can and perhaps should run on AdWords especially if you do not show in the top three organic. Google has lots of propaganda that says that AdWords supports SEO and vice-versa, and that you do not get cannibalization of clicks... but I am skeptical. I think they are pretty duplitious about this, so as a conservative when it comes to money, I think the barrier is either you're in the top three or top ten and then do not advertise for that keywords.
Ultimately, it's all about ROI and budget. If the ROI supports AdWords then of course go for it.
