This video, presented by Hal Varian - Chief Economist for Google, explains the complexity of the “Google Ad Auction”. Hal tells viewers what a “Google Ad Auction” is, and how it relates to the overall price an advertiser pays for his/her ad. Hal takes the viewer through a brief overview of the bidding process and how the actual CPC (cost-per-click) is determined. Factors such as Quality Score, Relevance, and Landing Pages are key elements in determining the value of a keyword, and how much the bidder will actually pay for it, relevant to his/her “bid”. Hal takes us through each step of the method Google uses in determining the placement of advertiser’s ads, from the initial bidding of a keyword; to what a quality score is and what are the three components that make up the quality score; to the AdRank; and then finally to the actual CPC (cost per click). We finished watching the video with a very good understanding of how the Google Ad Auction works, relative to the quality of their ad and how much an advertiser pays for their ad to appear on Google. Hal uses a sort of “mathematic” equation to explain this process, which we thought made a little confusing, but overall his presentation was engaging, thorough, and informative. We recommend anyone who advertises on Google to take ten minutes out of your day to watch this video, as it is what we consider to be “time well spent”.
