Google's Farmer Update AKA Panda Update, A Conversation about Content Farms and the Google Algorithm

Google has made a major change to its search algorithm, in what has come to be called the Farmer Update. Originally called the Panda Update, its purpose has been to deprecate content farms, such as eHow or Demand media. Matt Cutts and others have had extensive press interviews on the topic, and as usual, the New York Times and other media have only scratched the surface of the story.

Google actually benefits from content farms, in a perverse way, through its AdSense program. Many of the most aggressive Content Farms, hurt by the Farmer Update, serve Google AdSense ads. In fact, that is often their business model. So perhaps the dog will bite its own tail, and by improving the search algorithm via the Farmer Update, Google will ultimately hurt Content Farms and ultimately its own AdSense ad serving program!
