Targeting SEO Tips 2012 and Related Searches – a Blog Experiment
Keyword research is the starting point of good SEO-friendly blogging. Use free tools such as the Google keywords tool to identify keywords, both by volume and value. Got that. I am very intrigued, however, by the ‘related searches’ and ‘Google suggest’ features. These update much faster than the official Google keyword tool and on many low volume searches, they provide more information. For many of our students and clients, the Google Keywords Tool is of little use; their search query volumes are too low.
We here at the JM Internet Group already do well for our short tail searches – SEO Training, SEO Class, SEO Course – as well as our long tails such as ‘SEO Course Houston’ or ‘What is a landing page in Google Analytics.’ An area of weakness is the keyword phrase – SEO Tips, leading to our very popular section on SEO Tips.
So, an experiment… Create a series of blog posts shamelessly targeting related searches. Take a search query – in this case ‘SEO Tips’ and create blog posts that target the phrases indicated by ‘Google Suggest’ (the Google pull-down when you start typing, part of Google instant). Namely –

SEO tips 2012 Google
SEO tips and tricks
SEO tips for blogs
SEO Tips 2012
So we’ll start at the top – SEO Tips 2012… (Metric alert: as of today (September 8, 2012), our rank on the Google search ‘SEO tips 2012′ is not in the top 64 results)…. We’ll write some content on that phrases, such as you know 2012 is coming to an end, and I wonder what are the best SEO tips for 2012? 2012 was a pretty good year in terms of SEO; of course there was Panda and Penguin (so we need some tips to avoid those traps), but all in all, SEO has had a pretty good year.
One of my top tips for 2012 and SEO would be (guess what): blogging. Blog, blog, blog. Don’t put any barriers in the way of your blogging – just do it. Don’t stress perfect grammar, don’t stress perfect anything… Just having relevant to say about your target keywords (for example: SEO Tips 2012) and then blog about it.
Oh, and at the beginning of the blog post, have a desired action. In this case, driving traffic to our SEO Tips 2012 micro site, wherein we answer student questions and answers in a lovely SEO tip format.
