Review of Google AdWords Seminars for Success – Be careful! – NYC | Chicago | LA
Google makes 96% of its money via AdWords. 96%!. And Google has an impressive set of real-world seminars on AdWords called Seminars for Success. But are Google’s seminars on AdWords worth it? Are they a good deal? Or is this a bit like asking the used car salesman (and his cronies) to help you decide whether to buy a used car, and if so, which one to buy not to mention who’s financing to use? I recommend that anyone considering AdWords first take my Free AdWords Seminar: AdWords Gotchas to learn the three basic ‘gotchas’ in AdWords that can cost you money.
Beyond that here are some review thoughts about Google’s AdWords Seminars for Success program.
#1 – Who’s Paying for the AdWords Party?
First and foremost, consider who is paying for this party? Google, and its representatives in the AdWords engage program, are making money off of AdWords advertising (a.k.a., you). So, in terms of their training… if you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail? So the unfortunate fact is that this training emphasizes Google AdWords as the solution to everything, when in fact FREE SEO and FREE social media strategies might produce better ROI’s.
#2 – Who’s Training the Trainers at AdWords Seminars for Success?
Related to point #1, most of the trainers at these sessions will have ‘drunk the AdWords koolaide,’ which means that they are not only going to recommend AdWords as a solution to everything, but also their own training was distorted. By this I mean that Google is hardly going to point out how many pitfalls and tricks there are in AdWords that can cost you a lot of money. To be cynical, one can argue that Google explicitly builds the AdWords interface to lead you to over-advertise, and it trains its trainers to believe this is a ‘good thing.’ But it’s not. In my experience, many of the Google personnel either a) don’t understand the true ways to make AdWords work for you, or b) have drunk the koolaide, and believe it’s all wonderful. Not true.
#3 – The Display Network and Keyword Types in Google AdWords
As I explain in my ‘gottchas’ Free AdWords Seminar, the two big gotchas are the Display Network and bad keyword match types. If you do sign up for Google’s AdWords Seminars for Success, be sure to ask and be aware of these issues. Query your trainer about them. That’s better than any review of Google’s AdWords seminars, because it’s practical knowledge.
