Why Market via Pinterest?

If you’ve read this far, you’re definitely intrigued by Pinterest as a marketing platform. Perhaps you’re just starting out with a Pinterest Account for your business. Or perhaps you already have an Account, but want to make it really work. Let’s step back for a minute and ask: why market on Pinterest?

Here are some reasons:

 

  • Pinterest is pro-shopping. People use Pinterest as an “idea board” system, and much of that is shopping-related. Pinterest users, therefore, are very receptive to marketing messages, especially in retail and do-it-yourself topics.
  • Pinterest is growing rapidly. Pinterest has been one of the most rapidly growing social media, and with a strong foothold in women and shopping, it has room to grow upwards to new demographics and new usages. The Pinterest train has not yet left the station!
  • Pinterest is Unique. The concept of “pins” and “idea boards” was invented by Pinterest, and as a visual bookmarking system makes Pinterest different from all other social media. Indeed, in a desperate struggle to remain relevant, Google+ has copied Pinterest with its “collections” concept.
  • Pinterest is cheap. Pinterest is, of course, free to use. And in terms of marketing there is a lot you can do, for free, to build your brand, spread eWOM (electronic word of mouth), help you stay top-of-mind with your customers, and even “get shares” or “go viral.” Pinterest can work hand in glove with your online eCommerce store.
  • Pinterest has advertising. If you advertise smart on Pinterest, and combine paid advertising with free organic Pinterest marketing, you can grow the reach of your company via promoted pins.

 

Pinterest, however, is also complicated. Using it is one thing, and marketing on Pinterest is another. Most businesses fail at Pinterest marketing because they just don’t “get it.” They don’t understand how Pinterest works, especially the concepts of “idea boards” and “pins,” and they fail to see the incredible marketing opportunities beneath the surface of recipes, do-it-yourself knitting projects, and the disorder of the Pinterest visual bookmarking system. Others focus on Pinterest, without really seeing that to-date it has a narrow range on retail, women, and do-it-yourselfers. Quite simply, you have to invest some time to learn whether and/or “how” to market on Pinterest.
