Two Types of Best-Selling Business Books

The world of books is as crowded as ever, as the book reading public migrates online. Within the realm of books on business, two main types of books have emerged. The first type might be called a “conceptual” book or a “think piece.”  Books such as the new book, Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX and the Quest for a Fantastic Future by Ashlee Vance, fall into this first category. These books are not meant to provide “hands on” advice for a small business owner or marketer. Rather, they overview an area of interest and provide fun, informative food-for-thought to the reader. At the end of the reading experience, however, the reader can be left with little or nothing in terms of practical advice for his or her business. The second type of business book might be called a “hands on” books. These books can be very conceptual and thought-provoking, but they have a focus on practical, hands-on advice on how to be a better business person.  Dale Carnegie’s classic, How to Win Friends and Influence People, falls into this category.  At the end of reading this book, the reader does indeed have practical advice on how to change his or her business behavior to achieve better results.
