The Revolution Continues: New Media and Marketing in 2017
The birth of the commercial Internet in 1994 sparked a revolution in media and in marketing. Prior to that date, marketing focused on traditional print media as well as venues such as trade shows to reach customers. Customers were unable to really “talk back” to companies, and the role of marketing was to essentially broadcast a branding message. The first wave of the Internet was the creation of websites along with advertising vehicles such as Google pay-per-click advertising. The second wave has been the birth of social media sites such as Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter, which allow customers to “talk back.” In addition, review sites such as Yelp and Amazon, have made the importance of reviews incredible for many small businesses. In the New Media Scholarship, college-bound youth along with young people already in college are asked to brainstorm how the New Media environment continues to change the way that customers find information and the ways that marketers can reach these customers. The hope is for academia to “catch up” in terms of how marketing is taught to the tremendous and revolutionary changes that are occurring in the world outside of the Ivory Tower.
